Winery Spotlight - Inglenook (Napa)

I love a winery with history, and that is one of the reasons I have chosen to highlight the historic Inglenook Winery in Napa, California. The chateau I'm standing in front of was constructed in 1887 for a Finnish sea captain who had dreams of producing high quality wine in California that would rival the well-established Old World wines of Europe. And, in 1941, this dream became reality with Inglenook's Cabernet Sauvignon receiving a perfect 100 point score from Wine Spectator.

When visiting Inglenook, along with tasting the wine, you are invited to explore the grounds and chateau containing vintage artifacts of the early wine making history of the estate. Bring purchased by Coppola in the 1970s, the house also contains some movie memorabilia (although if this is really what you are after, do check out the Francis Ford Coppola Winery), but what I found most interesting is the estate's link to Classic Hollywood - Clark Gable and Jean Harlow visited the estate once upon a time, and their names are signed in the guestbook on display to visitors.

Ok, back to wine - Inglenook offers a formal seated wine tasting, and if this is of interest, you will want to make reservations in advance. If you can't get a spot, there is a delightful bistro in the chateau open to the public where you can order wine by the glass, cheese, and french bread and do your own pairing either sitting in the historic wine cellars or have a picnic outside overlooking the vineyards.
